Artis is the name with which the Koninklijk Zoölogisch Genootschap Natura Artis Magistra is commonly known, that is to say the oldest zoological complex in the Netherlands, which has its seat in Amsterdam since 1 May 1838 (more or less 6 km).
– DE SCHREEUW AND THEO VAN GOGH
De Schreeuw is a sculpture (stainless steel sculpture is 4.5 meters high) in Amsterdam's Oosterpark that commemorates the murdered Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Theo van Gogh was a descendant of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh's brother, he was assassinated on 2 November 2004 at Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam by Mohammed Bouyeri, an Islamic exponent of the Hofstad Group, in retaliation against some images shown in his film Submission.
The Oosterpark in Amsterdam is the first large park laid out by the municipality of Amsterdam. The park, an English garden, was designed by Dutch landscape architect Leonard Anthony Springer and was laid out in 1891. The park contains, among the other, the National Slavery Monument, which commemorates the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands in 1863, and a memorial to Theo van Gogh (descendant of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh's brother), a film maker and controversial columnist who in 2004 was murdered nearby by a muslim extremist.
The Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics) is an ethnographic museum in Amsterdam, inaugurated in its present location and form in 1978 and dedicated to the culture, art and economy of the former Dutch colonies (such as: Indonesia, Surinam and the Dutch Caribbean) and of other countries in the tropical and subtropical area.
